AAUMinho wins eight medals at the National University Swimming Championship – Short Pool

Last Sunday, January 29th, the Academic Association of the University of Minho was represented by 18 athletes, at the National University Swimming Championship – Short Pool. The competition took place at the Senhora da Hora Municipal Swimming Pool, in Matosinhos.

The Minho Academy added four gold medals, one silver medal and three bronze medals, thus winning four national university champion titles.

In the men’s 50m freestyle, Tomás Lopes won the silver medal, after finishing in second place. Tomás Sousa, Marvin Khoury, José Araújo and Pedro Pinto also competed, finishing in 19th, 20th, 27th and 46th place, respectively.

In the women’s 50m butterfly, Filipa Fernandes won the third place and, consequently, the bronze medal. Inês Magalhães and Carla Marques reached the 20th and 21st places, respectively. In the men’s competition, José Araújo finished in 32nd place.

In the men’s 50m backstroke, Rodrigo Cunha added a bronze medal, after reaching third place. José João Gonçalves also participated in the competition, finishing in 15th place. Regarding the women’s competition, Filipa Fernandes finished in fourth place.

In the men’s 50m breaststroke, Diogo Sousa, Vitor Lelis and Carlos Alberto Torre participated, finishing the race in 31st, 33rd and 36th place, respectively. In the individual 100m butterfly, Inês Magalhães finished in 13th place, while David Cruz in 14th place.

About the men’s 100m breaststroke, Rafael Simões was national university champion, after winning first place along with the gold medal. Vitor Lelis finished in 23rd place in this race. Inês Magalhães also participated in the women’s 100m breaststroke, in which she placed 13th.

Regarding the men’s 100m freestyle, Tomás Lopes won another medal, this time gold. The athlete became national university champion, after finishing in first place. Tomás Sousa, Marvin Khoury, Márcio Gomes and Pedro Pinto also participated, reaching 20th, 23rd, 25th and 33rd place, respectively. In the women’s races, Joana Rebelo finished in 18th and ninth place, in the 100m and 400m freestyle, respectively.

In the 100m backstroke, AAUMinho won another champion title in the men’s race. Rodrigo Cunha won the gold medal, after finishing the competition in first place. José João Gonçalves also participated, finishing in 13th place. In turn, Carla Marques reached seventh place in the women’s 100m backstroke.

Rafael Simões became double national university champion, after winning another gold medal in the men’s 200m styles. David Cruz and Carlos Alberto Torre also participated in the race, having finished in ninth and 14th place, respectively.

In the individual men’s 400m freestyle, AAUMinho remained on the podium with Márcio Gomes. The athlete finished the race in third place, winning a bronze medal.

The AAUMinho women’s team, made up of Carla Marques, Filipa Fernardes, Inês Magalhães and Joana Rebelo, finished in eighth and new place, in the 4x50m style and freestyle relay, respectively.

In the men’s relay, AAUMinho was represented by three teams. In the 4x50m style relay, David Cruz, Rafael Simões, Rodrigo Cunha and Tomás Lopes reached fifth place, while Diogo Sousa, José Gonçalves, Marvin Khoury and Tomás Sousa finished in 17th place and Pedro Pinto, José Araújo, Márcio Gomes and Vitor Lelis finished the race in 21st place. In the 4x50m freestyle relay, the team of David, Rafael, Rodrigo and Tomás finished in fourth place, while the team of José Araújo, José Gonçalves, Marvin Khoury and Tomás Sousa reached eighth place and Carlos Torre, Diogo Sousa, Márcio Gomes and Vitor Lelis finished in 18th place.
